The Kissing Problem in Three Dimensions

The kissing number k(3) is the maximal number of equal size nonoverlapping spheres in three dimensions that can touch another sphere of the same size. This number was the subject of a famous discussion between Isaac Newton and David Gregory in 1694. The first proof that k(3) = 12 was given by Schütte and van der Waerden only in 1953. We present a new solution of this problem.

Siegel ’ s Problem in Three Dimensions

We discuss our recent solution to Siegel’s 1943 problem concerning the smallest co-volume lattices of hyperbolic 3-space. Over the last few decades the theory of Kleinian groups—discrete groups of isometries of hyperbolic 3-space—has flourished because of its intimate connectionswith low-dimensional topology and geometry and has been inspired by thediscoveries ofW. P. Thurston. The culminationm...

The 2-Center Problem in Chordal Graphs

In a graph G, the p-center problem is to identify p vertices of G for locating some kind of facilities such that the maximum among the distances from all vertices to their nearest facility is minimized. In this paper, we propose an O(n)-time algorithm for computing a 2-center in a chordal graph with maximum degree at most three, where a graph is chordal if every induced cycle of length at least...

The Rectilinear Minimum Bends Path Problem in Three Dimensions

Abstract. In this paper we consider the Rectilinear Minimum Bends Path Problem among rectilinear obstacles in three dimensions. The problem is well studied in two dimensions, but is relatively unexplored in higher dimensions. We give an algorithm which solves the problem in worst-case O(βn log n) time, where n is the number of corners among all obstacles, and β is the size of a BSP decompositio...

Optimal Control of the Thermistor Problem in Three Spatial Dimensions, Part 2: Optimality Conditions

This paper is concerned with the state-constrained optimal control of the threedimensional thermistor problem, a fully quasilinear coupled system of a parabolic and elliptic PDE with mixed boundary conditions. This system models the heating of a conducting material by means of direct current. Local existence, uniqueness and continuity for the state system are derived by employing maximal parabo...
